Mrs. Ellen Kanik

My name is Ellen Kanik.  I am a product of the Chicago Public School System back before you had to wear a Kevlar vest to Preschool.  I attended Brentano Elementary School and Schurz High School.  I went to Northeastern University were I majored in Elementary Education.  Unfortunately, there were no jobs so I went into the business world.

I am married, my husband attended St. Edward, as did all three of my children.  I started volunteering in the library in 1990 and haven’t left yet!  Although I went to a public school I am getting close to have been here longer that my whole family!!

Welcome to the World of Computers!!

Second Trimester I can hardly believe it!  This is my twelfth year teaching computers at St. Edward and I have been in the Library for over twenty!!  My how time flies!

Third Grade:

  • During the second trimester we will continue to work on our typing skills.
  • We will be adding cutting, pasting, copying and editing in general.
  • I try to strive to teacher the children where to save their work.  They need to know that computers have different folders and drives that they can utilize.
  • Each child will learn the basic parts of the computer.
  • We will be using Microsoft Works Word Processor for a multitude of projects.
  • We also will use the MS Paint program, as well as Hoyle word games that reinforce the keyboard as well as their minds.

 Fourth Grade:

  •  During the second trimester we will continue to work on our typing skills using the Typing Instructor Program.  The children should be able to type in the 10-15 WPM range with an accuracy of 95% or better.
  • Cutting, pasting, copying and editing in general is an essential tool that the children need to master
  •  They need to know that the computers have different folders and drives that they can utilize.
  • Each child will learn the basic parts of the computer.
  • We will continue to use Microsoft Works Word Processor for a multitude of projects.
  • They should know the difference between the Tool Bar, Menu Bar, Maximize, Minimize, Restore and Close.
  • They should know the different types of buttons used in Microsoft Programs.
  • They should be able to open programs with Icons as well as from the Start button.
  • Each child should know the difference between word wrapping and typing line by line.
  • They should know how to print to more than one printer.
  • Each child should be able to make their own letterhead with their address.
  • We also will use the MS Paint program, as well as Hoyle word games that reinforce the keyboard as well as their minds.

Fifth Grade

  • Each child should know the basic parts of a computer.
  • Each child should be able to type with two hands (no hunt & peck) and be able to type a minimum of 15 WPM with 95% accuracy using the Typing Instructor Program.
  • Each child should have a basic understanding of MS Works. They should be able to use the Task Wizard to make a simple Letterhead.
  • We will use that letterhead to practice writing simple letters
  • They should be able to cut, paste and edit documents.
  • They should know the different drives on their computers.
  • They should know how to print to more than one printer.

 Sixth Grade:

  • Each child should know the basic parts of a computer.
  • Each child should be able to type with two hands (no hunt & peck) and be a able to type a minimum of 20 WPM with 95% accuracy using the Typing Tutor Program.
  • Each child should be less inclined to look at their keyboard.
  • Each child should have a basic understanding of  MS Office, we will use the program to make fun projects like cards and posters.
  • They should be able to cut, paste and edit documents.
  • They should know the different drives on their computers.
  • They should know how to print to more than one printer

Seventh Grade:

  •  Each child should be able to type with two hands and be able to type a minimum of 25 WPM with 95% accuracy.
  • Each child should have a basic understanding MS Office, including Publishers, Excel, Word and Power Point.
  • We will on different projects: Place Cards, Newsletters, Holiday Cards, Posters, etc.
  • After the new year we will be working on Excel to learn more about Spreadsheets and Graphs.

 Eighth Grade –

  • The Eight graders will be involved in typing and gathering information for their yearbook which they will receive at their Graduation Dance.
  • We will continue to use MS Office (Word, Publisher, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.) for a variety of projects.
  • We will review Excel after Christmas to reinforce the Spreadsheets and graphing.
  • Occasionally I will have the children start a project in school – save to their flash drive and e-mail it to me at computers@stedwardschool.com – this e-mail is for projects only.
