Our
Parish was established in 1899 by the Viatorian Fathers of St. Viator
Church to serve 100 families in an area which extended from Belmont
Avenue on the south, to Skokie on the north. The community of Mayfair
was originally known as Montrose.
The first church of St. Edward Parish was a frame structure built
in 1899 at the northeast corner of Sunnyside and Kostner Avenues.
The parish school was opened in 1910 with an enrollment of 200 students
under the direction of the Sisters of Saint Dominic from Springfield,
Illinois.
During
the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's, the Mayfair community grew rapidly
and many Catholic families joined the St. Edward family. The priests,
sisters, and parishioners worked together to provide a stately church
in which to worship (1940), a solid brick school building to educate
the children (1938), and a minim school/gymnasium building for education
and recreation (1956).
In
our first 100 years we have grown, built, educated, celebrated,
and most importantly, served God together. Our parish has always
been a community of diversity; our present membership includes people
from more than forty countries. We take pride in reflecting the
"solid as a rock" universality of the Church promised to us by Jesus
Christ.
